Mexico

Tourism is a very important contributor to Mexico’s economy and is visited mostly by Americans and Canadians and to a lesser extent people from Europe and Asia. Tourism peaks between December and early summer but the weeks before Easter and that of spring break are wildly busy as college students flock to the beaches for the infamous ‘spring break’ parties and activities. Interestingly, tourism is also increasing among Mexicans as the country’s middle class grows offering a chance for vacationing in their own country.

Mexico has so much to offer that one can’t possibly cover it all in any adequate detail, however there are certain parts of Mexico that are more popular with tourists than others. Obviously the beaches of Mexico are one of the country’s largest tourist draws. From the famous beaches of Acapulco, the more modern and prestigious Cabo San Lucas beaches, the party beaches of Cancun to the more recently developed beaches of the Mayan Riviera, Mexico typifies a country that has something to offer every individual.

Located on the Pacific coast of Mexico is the tourist city destination of Acapulco. This city was once the ‘it’ destination for the rich and famous but the beaches have long since become overcrowded with time share properties, resorts and vendors. This area now is popular amongst budget conscious travelers who are looking for a vacation in the sun without having to break the bank.

The southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula is the high-end resort area of Cabo San Lucas. This area is known primarily for white sandy beaches, world-class scuba diving, marlin fishing and golf. This area is very popular with couples and while many of the resorts certainly do offer children’s programs this area is less family friendly than other areas like the Mayan Riviera.

Cancun has established itself as the premiere location for adults looking for a good time. With world class dining, an abundance of nightlife, accommodations to suit every budget and great beaches, this area caters to college students during spring break and to adults of every age who are looking to relax, party, and not eat breakfast before noon.

South of Cancun on the Yucatan peninsula is the more recently developed area called the Mayan Riviera. This area is a contrast to Cancun in many ways. Cancun is crowded with resort bumping into resort, fast food, nightlife and shopping on every corner. The Riviera however, is home to sprawling resorts that are city-like compounds in themselves offering all inclusive packages with multiple restaurants, shopping and entertainment all on their private grounds. These luxurious resorts cater to families but are also popular with the elderly who are looking for a quiet vacation.

No matter where in Mexico you decide to vacation, there is no end to the number of activities available to you. From touring ancient ruins to swimming with the dolphins or just taking a leisurely horseback ride along a deserted beach, Mexico is North America’s premiere vacation destination.
