Florida

For British travellers looking for a holiday abroad that's family-friendly but still has plenty to offer to adults, sunny Florida might be the right destination. With the Gulf of Mexico lining one side of the peninsula and the Atlantic Ocean on the other, you're never far from the beach in Florida – and you're never far from the sun, either. Even in the dead of winter, typical Florida weather can easily reach a warm 21 degrees Celsius. In the summer time, don't expect any temperature lower than 26 or 27 degrees.

There's so much to see and do in Florida that it might take multiple visits to one of America's premiere tourist destinations to see everything. From busy, cosmopolitan cities like Miami, to Disney World, to the quiet, clear waters of Destin, Florida can offer fun for the kids, culture for the adults, and beaches for everyone. Here's a look at three cities in Florida that are representative of your holiday options in the States.

Miami

As singer-actor Will Smith told us back in 1997, Miami is the type of place where every day is like a Mardi Gras party. Indeed, Miami is famous for its club scene, ranging from upscale hotel clubs to independent sports bars and nightclubs. Some of the nightclubs are exclusive, with strict dress codes. Be careful, trying to talk your way in, bribe your way in, or otherwise pull a fast one on these doormen will generally leave you sitting outside.

There's so much more to do in Miami than just hitting the club scene. The beaches in Miami are famous for their white sand and blue waves; many American movies and TV shows have made the Miami area beaches famous. At Lummus Park Beach, you might even see a photo shoot in progress.

The food in Miami is also legendary. A mixing pot of Cuban, Jamaican, Dominican, Haitian, and American cultures lead to some interesting and amazing tastes. In Miami, you can sample the culture, food, and music of the Caribbean without having to leave the United States.

Orlando

Orlando, as most holidaymakers know, is home to Disney World. Although Disney has theme parks in California and in France, it is really the park in Florida that continues to capture the imagination of children and adults from around the world.

Thanks to Disney, other theme parks have also sprung up in Orlando, making Orlando a veritable theme park heaven for tourists who enjoy that sort of entertainment; in Orlando, there are more theme parks and entertainment attractions than anywhere else in the world. The most popular besides Disney are probably SeaWorld, Universal Studios, and Busch Gardens.

Naples

For a more upscale, quiet time in Florida, focused mostly on soft sand and gentle surf, consider a visit to Naples. At one point, the relatively small city (by American standards) of Naples was the richest city in the United States. Whereas in Miami you'll find a thriving, teeming, and very adult vacation, and in Orlando you'll find amusements for the whole family, in Naples you'll have a chance to slow down and just relax. The pace in Naples is slower, and even the parties are quiet.

In sum, there's nothing you can't find in Florida. Whether your ideal holiday is a cultural experience, something perfect for the kids, or a relaxing time on the beach, Florida can fulfill your wishes.
