Rhodes
Rhodes is a Greek Island located southwest of Turkey in the Aegean Sea. It is the largest of the Dodecanese Islands and is home to the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Rhodes is also a major tourist destination and has much to offer vacationers be they young or old.
Initially it can be the endless kilometers of pristine beaches that attract vacationers to Rhodes, and they are indeed stunning. The best areas for beaches are on the eastern coast and in particular around Lindos. Even during the peak season it is possible to find deserted beaches. The southern portion of Rhodes has beaches that should not be overlooked despite the area being less developed. There one can find the beaches of Lardos and Glystra both well deserving of a visit. The western coast of the island is where the main tourist resorts are located and the beaches here tend to be comprised of small stones and pebbles. Here one will find the popular resort areas of Trianda, Paradisi, Kremasti and Ixia.
Rhodes has much to offer besides its beaches. The Aquarium in Rhodes Town with a stunning array of sea life is a great way for families to spend an afternoon, and it is open daily. Glass bottomed boat tours are also available and provide a fascinating look into the ocean. These tours last about three hours and discounts are available for children. In addition, the resort villages of Lindos, Lardos and Pefkos provide much eye fodder for those who prefer walking, and offer quaint boutiques for shopping or casual cafés for lunch or afternoon coffee.
Rhodes also has an impressive history and many medieval buildings are worth visiting. The historical section of Old Town in Rhodes Town contains a Knights’ Quarter that showcases the island’s history and Minoan heritage. Palaces, temples, Acropolis’ and more await the intrepid historian as well as the ruins of Kamiros City that date back to the 7th century B.C.
Island hopping is also a popular activity for tourists. Cruises are available to many close-by islands and day trips can be arranged to the islands of Halki and Symi or to Marmaris which is a city in Turkey. Crete and Kos are also not too far away and are also excellent places to visit.
Even if all you want to do on your vacation is lie back with your feet up, the history, beaches, friendly people and resort atmosphere of this island will capture your heart and soul and you’ll find yourself wondering when you can return.
