Kalamaki

Kalamaki is a resort on the Greek island of Zante or Zakynthos. It is only a 15 minute ride from the airport, and is within walking distance of another resort, Laganas. Whereas Laganas is bustling and hectic, Kalamaki still has a traditional feel and a more relaxed atmosphere. Many travelers like to stay in Kalamaki because it is close to the bars and clubs of Laganas, but offers a quiet spot for relaxing and recuperating.

One of Nature's Rare Spectacles

Kalamaki Beach is the scene of one of nature's most famous sights, the migration of the Caretta Caretta turtles. The natives are quite fond of their little friends, and plane landings are restricted to daytime hours to avoid disturbing their propagation. Eco-tourists flock to Zante every year to watch the spectacle, and sunbeds and beach umbrellas are available for rent. There are also snack shops, bars and other establishments catering to the turtle watchers.

The beach of Kalamaki is generally quieter and less crowded than that at nearby Laganas, and while parts of it are cordoned off during the turtles' spawning, there is still plenty of room for strolling. This is a good place for those who are tired of crowds and want to enjoy the natural scenery and atmosphere.

Nightlife and World-Famous Cuisine

The beach area at Kalamaki is full of wonderful little restaurants and bars. While the region has undergone many changes over the past few years, one locale that has not changed is the famous Cave Bar, a relaxing night spot with great atmosphere and surprisingly affordable prices.

Another famous place for eating and drinking is Sugar Reef, which has excellent food and loads of ambience. Coconut Joe's is an authentic beach bar, while the Drunk Bar is a good old-fashioned sports bar with an island feel.
