Off the coast of Epirus, Greece, in the Ionian cluster, lies the verdant island of Corfu. With sandy beaches, emerald green water, historical landmarks, a number of attractions and areas of vibrant nightlife, this island makes a great getaway for singles and families.
For the family on holiday, there are plenty of places of interest to visit. The Old Fort of Corfu predates the 13th century. Though the years it has been refortified and added onto with improvements and newer buildings. One of the oldest buildings, the prison, was built by the Venetians in 1786. The Main Gate in its present state has remained as it is since 1550. The Old Fort is steeped in history and ancient culture. Another point of interest is the Kassiopi Castle which overlooks the harbour. These ruins predate the 12th century. These make wonderful and educational sites to visit with the children and grandchildren.
For some wet fun in the sun, there is waterskiing, parasailing, and windsurfing to name a few. Windsurfing has become especially popular. Wind conditions in the morning are a fine time for novices and the afternoons are for tried and tested experts as the winds increase in speed. Scuba diving is increasing in popularity here, and little wonder. The emerald green waters are a diver’s paradise. Caves, reefs, and rocks are habitat to vibrantly colored fish and coral. There are also wrecks to investigate.
The nightlife is alive and well in Corfu. The coastal road offers a diverse selection of bars and nightclubs with many different styles of music. The B52 boasts techno-raves until the early hours of morning, or specially themed retro nights with music from the 60’s, 70’s and the 80’s. Edem, a beach bar by day and rock club by night, is there for fun and refreshment day and night.
