Puerto Pollensa, Majorca, is a town that prides itself on its relaxed, out-of-the-ordinary atmosphere. Unlike the frantic, noisy entertainment to be found in some other tourist centers, amusement in Puerto Pollensa is quieter and more laid-back. One of the main activities is the after-dinner stroll along the Pine Walk, a promenade that runs the length of the resort. There are many events rooted in the cultural and religious history of the region, and visitors can get a glimpse of tradition that might be absent in more crowded locales.
Time-Honored Traditions:
The Fiesta of Sant Antoni happens on January 16 and 17, and is celebrated with bonfires, the singing of traditional songs and various cultural activities. Just a few days later, on January 19 and 20, is the Fiesta of Sant Sebastia which includes a parade and traditional dancing.
Another religious event that draws many visitors takes place on Good Friday. This is when a procession moves up the famed Calvari Steps to the little church above the town. The moving procession is lit by torches and affords a panoramic view of the Puerto Pollensa.
There is a series of religious fiestas running from the middle of July through August 2. There are many events during this period, including dancing, reenactments, processions and a big fireworks display.
Modern Festivities:
There is more in Puerto Pollensa than tradition. The Pollensa Music Festival draws classical music enthusiasts in July and August, when a series of concerts takes place under the direction of renowned Czech violinist Eugen Prokop.
The season culminates in the Autumn Festival in the second weekend in November. This event combines the old and the new, featuring local crafts and games with a jazz festival.
Puerto Pollensa offers something hard to find today: a truly relaxing holiday in an enchanting place.
