Lagos
Lagos is in what is thought of as Portugal’s most popular and fashionable holiday spots – the Algarve. The sandy, gold beaches, clear blue waters of the Atlantic, and the perfect climate throughout the year are just some of the things that make Lagos a desirable destination. Throw in a little history and Lagos is a perfect spot for families, young adults, and seniors.
Undoubtedly, it is the beaches in Lagos that attract so many. Some of the beaches are open to the sea with views of miles of ocean while others are more intimate, tucked into the cliffs. The beaches in Lagos include:
· Meia Praia is a 2-1/2 expanse of beach that has everything needed to enjoy just about every water sport, including sailing. A walk out onto the Isthmus of Alvor provides a view of the 18th century fort that provided a defensive front for Portugal for 200 years.
· There are several small beaches like Batata, Homers, Pinhao, and Dona Ana that enjoy the cliffs as their backdrop with some unusual formations of rock. The clear, peaceful water makes these beaches popular, but they don’t fill up as fast and an early arrival can afford a little privacy before the crowds arrive. From these beaches you can find boat tours that will take you into some of the many caves along the shore.
When not enjoying everything the beaches have to offer, you can wander through the historical areas of Lagos. Near the marina area there are several centuries-old fortifications as well as the spot where Henry the Navigator built his ships. There are also three beautiful old churches in Lagos that are well worth a visit – the “golden church” of Saint Anthony, Sao Sebastiao, and SantaMaria of Misericorida.
Rounding out what Lagos has to offer is the nightlife. In the center of town is the square known as Praca de Gil Eanes where you’ll find charming outdoor cafes and plenty of places for live entertainment.
