Alanya
Alanya is a popular Mediterranean holiday destination on the Gulf of Antalya, in Turkey. Like many resorts in the region, it boasts sparkling clear waters, pristine beaches, and a rich culture to satisfy anyone's appetite.
Alanya's reputation as a seaside resort goes back hundreds of years, when the Seljuk Turks took possession of it. And like all seaside resorts, it is renowned for its interminable beaches. The harbor is dotted with cafes, bars and restaurants, so you're never farther than a stone's throw for a place to get a drink. Activities associated with the beach, like snorkeling are easy to find. The peninsula overlooking the Mediterranean has one of the best views in the region.
When you're finished at the beach, you can take a hike up the hills to visit the landmarks. The biggest draw is the 13th century citadel Alanya Castle and its 83 towers, which 'protect' the Byzantine church, Ottoman villas, and market. Feel free to stumble around the picturesque alleys and their pastel colored buildings, where you will find all the deals on local crafts like jewelry and leather goods. The old city is truly an architectural treasure, and considered one of the best preserved in the region.
Other activities include bungee jumping, hiking, and golf. Shopping is plentiful, but you must haggle to get the best deals. Restaurants serve a wide variety of cuisines; no palette will go unsated.
Accommodations cater to the full spectrum of budgets, ranging from inexpensive "self-service" to luxuriant 5-star, but it is the budget traveler that the city has cultivated in the last decade. Buses go directly from the airport to the hotels, and many deals can be found at any time of the year.
The most popular time to visit Alanya is May to October, but the climate is temperate all year round and continues to attract visitors in the off peak season.
