Altinkum

Altinkum is a resort town on Turkey's Aegean shore, in the southwest. While not as popular as the nearby resort areas of Bodrum in Turkey and Kos in Greece, Altinkum is rapidly increasing in popularity as a holiday destination. However, it's still an excellent choice for someone who wants a Turkish beach holiday without having to deal with the crowds and noise at the better-known resorts.

Altinkum, whose name means "Golden Sands," has three beaches on the warm blue waters of the Aegean. The waters are relatively shallow, which makes them ideal for people who don't swim well or families with small children. Boating, waterskiing, and diving tours are available for the more adventurous as well. You can try an authentic Turkish bath in town, and it's only a short trip to the mineral baths in nearby Pamukkale as well.

History buffs will want to visit the ancient Temple of Apollo just outside of town. Day trips to other ruins and historical sites in the area are easily arranged, including a visit to the ruins of the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world.

If your holiday pleasures run more to nightlife and shopping, Altinkum can satisfy you as well. Dolphin Square in the city has modern stores and designer discount outlets for your purchasing pleasure. For a more culturally Turkish experience, visit the weekly market at Altinkum's neighbouring town of Didyma to haggle over food, clothes, spices, crafts, and treasures from the Turkish interior. The town also features a wide array of waterfront bars, discos, and clubs that come to life at night.
